- In Okaloosa County, 13 babies died of accidental suffocation in the last 4 years.
- Sleeping with an adult is a leading cause of infant deaths in Florida.
- The risk of infant death is 40 times greater for infants who sleep in an adult bed instead of alone in a crib.
- Accidental
Suffocation is most common among infants from birth to 4 months of age.
- Couches and lounge chairs are unsafe for babies because there are too many cracks to roll into and cushions to slide under.
- Falling asleep with your baby on a couch or in a lounge chair is equally as dangerous.
- Mattresses should be firm and fit snuggly in the crib/bassinet so infants do not become trapped between the mattress and the crib walls.

The
Safest Way For Baby To Sleep
|
- Place baby to sleep on
his or her back,
alone in crib or bassinet.
- Place crib or bassinet next to
parent's or caregiver's bed - that way when baby wakes at night, it is easy to respond quickly.
- Put
baby to bed wearing a one-piece pajamas, sometimes called a
"onesie".
If a blanket is needed, it should be a very light one; the baby's
feet should be placed at the bottom of the crib, and tuck the blanket firmly under the mattress at the foot and sides of the crib.
- Remove quilts, pillows, stuffed toys,
bumper pads or other objects that could suffocate them.
